TNT Cancels ‘Southland’

TNT Cancels 'Southland'

Critically lauded cop show was reborn on cabler after NBC debut

The second life of “Southland” on TNT has come to a close, with the network announcing the cop drama won’t return after five seasons.

In a statement Friday, the cabler said:

“TNT has made the difficult decision not to renew Southland for another season. We are enormously proud of Southland, which stands as one of the best police dramas ever made. Executive producers John Wells, Chris Chulack and Jonathan Lisco, along with creator Ann Biderman and our partners at Warner Bros. Television, have given us five seasons of powerful, unforgettable storytelling, for which we are deeply grateful. We also want to thank the amazing cast for their impassioned, no-holds-barred performances, and the production team for their tenacity shooting on the streets of real-world Los Angeles. We wish everyone associated with Southland the very best.”

“Southland” premiered as an NBC drama in April 2009 to promising critical notices but small audience numbers for its initial seven-episode run. Though it was renewed for a second season, the next batch of episodes never aired on NBC, which delayed the show’s season premiere — then canceled the show that October, in part because of the drama crunch created by the Peacock’s decision to dedicate its 10 p.m. hour to “The Jay Leno Show.”

In November 2009, TNT acquired the rights to episodes from the first and second seasons, and began airing them in January 2010, before subsequent seasons were greenlit the next three years. The season finale of “Southland” averaged 1.8 million viewers last month.

This year, three “Southland” stars landed roles on broadcast pilots that stood a chance for series pickups: Shawn Hatosy in CBS drama “Reckless,” Regina King is in ABC’s comedy “Divorce: A Love Story,” and Benjamin McKenzie is in CBS drama “The Advocates.”

Christopher Chulack, John Wells, Jonathan Lisco and Andrew Stearn exec produced “Southland,” which also featured Michael Cudlitz and Regina King. Warner Bros. TV produced.

The best police show EVER. Shame on TNT for pulling the plug. Please reconsider this decision!!

  2. D L Blackmon says:

Clearly the best police drama since Police Story in the 1970s; but that has little to do with anything these days. Maybe HBO/Showtime/Cinemax could use a surefire series hit and tease us with a rerun of all the previous episodes.

  3. Seldon Irvine says:

It really sucks that the producers don’t give a damn about the viewing audience and quality programming. Keep pushing trash like “Honey boo-boo” or those stupid reality shows…all part of the dumbing down of America. Do the right thing…BRING SOUTHLAND BACK !!!!

  4. Lizzie says:

I’m guess I already saw the final SOUTHLAND show, it is gonna be left “hanging”?? All the CRAP that is on TV ie: carTRASHians = VILE & DISGUSTING vs. SOUTHLAND, give me a HUGE BREAK!!!!!!!!! SOUTHLAND IS SIMPLY A GRRRR8888888 SHOW!!!! I guess w/ 34, w/ mine, there are 35 comments, I guess not enough to bring SOUTHLAND BACK!!!!!!!!!! I am ANGRY that this GRRRRR8888888 SHOW is being cancelled!!!!!!!! :-( :-( Ben McKenzie is going to be in a new show, but I WANT HIM TO BE IN A CONTINUED (ED, ED, ED, ED) SOUTHLAND!!!!!!

  5. Robin Gibbs says:

Please do not cancel Southland. If these other shows pan out for these actors, kill off their characters.-or have Regina King leave and marry You are a police drama for pete’s sake. I must know what , happens to John Cooper. Does he live, does he have a baby with his ex?

  6. misbrooklyn says:

What the h… wrong with TNT. The best show on tv

  7. Larry B says:

Shame on TNT for canceling Southland and renewing shows such as Bones, Franklin and Bash and Rizzoli and Isles what a shame. There is nothing on that network for me.

  8. Mike says:

NBC should pick it up. They won’t have to worry about Jay Leno anymore.

  9. J C Capiola says:

We are bombarded with all the Honey Boo Boo’s of the world, but a top notch police drama bites the dust??? What is wrong with you people. So disgusting it has been cancelled.

  10. Rick Harrison says:

Please someone with intellectual and entertainment courage pick up this one-of-a-kind series. TNT now officially joins the ranks of other second-rate cable networks pandering to the lowest level of channel flippers.

  11. Fortunato J Merlino says:

Fortunato says: T.N.T. executives are a bunch of over paid and out of touch MORONS…Wake

  12. Mattie Appleyard says:

So, TNT, what else do you have to offer now that you have canceled the terrific “Southland?” Oh yeah – Law and Order reruns. I’m done with you. Others will be too. Advertisers – why waste your dough on a channel that no one is watching?

  13. suegee says:

Sure, the show was great, so just cancel it. It really ticks me off to love a show and then have it cancelled for no apparent reason. I thought something bad happened after the last episode. They leave on stupid “comedy” shows and take off the best.Idiots.

  14. cookie says:

Seriously????? Best show on TV! Seriously?????

  15. Roxanne says:

This sucks!! I was just telling my husband that TNT was cool and then they go and pull this! Ugh BRIBG BACK SOUTHLAND!!!

  16. Flora says:

Are you kidding me?? This has been one of the best cop shows that I have seen in a very long time, how could you cancel this show especially after all of the praise it has received! TNT you really don’t know what you are doing. What a shame if it’s going to be replaced with some reality show or some other stupid so called comedy!! What a waste of time and electricity!! Not good TNT not good at all!!

  17. Gregg Stasch says:

It’s to bad real good shows get the boot and the networks keep the crap . Keep Southland on and keep your viewers happy before you lose viewers.

  18. Gregg Stasch says:

It’s to bad real good shows get the boot and the networks keep the crap

  19. Ridiculous! Southland was the best cop show ever! How could you cancel it? TNT, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

  20. Elena says:

This was the best show ever, TNT you are dead to me.

  21. Samantha says:

I’m very disappointed there wont BA another season.

  22. Teri says:

Great! We started watching because everyone said it was such a great show. We finally caught up on Netflix and now it’s gone. It is a great show, I don’t think your going to find something better to put on in it’s place. Very sad to see it go.

  23. KHJ says:

NOOOOOOOOOO! Why must the BEST shows on television disappear to be replaced by a crappy reality show that could only last a season? Southland was one of the best programs on television that was real, raw, gritty, compelling, captivating, convincing and humorous as well. WHAT A SHAME!

  24. the stig says:

This is a big mistake by TNT. What are the chances FOX can pick up Southland?

  25. Enith Zaid says:

Eenie says…..nononononp. Cannot do. This is crazy. Wake up. This show is better than the crappy Mad Men. Please don’t do this.

  26. Judi Seid says:

SHAME on TNT!! This was an excellent series. Stupid executives . . .

  27. Denise says:

What a tremendous loss! Everything about this show has been incredible and I have been a fan from the very beginning. I’m an truly sad.

  28. DMF says:

  31. Nisha Tate says:

Nooooooo! Please tell me it’s not so keep it on I love southland please don’t take it away please noooooooo

  32. Scott K says:

I thought it to be a great show and was looking forward to next season since that one guy got shot in the end by his own. I’ll have to write TNT or TBS whichever owns the show. I’ll miss it along with Deadwood on HBO. What’s next Jackie or Boardwalk Empire. I guess next TNT will cancel Sons Of Anarchy? All of the good shows that are on They keep Charlie or the NBA Playoffs and cancel Southland. Cable TV stations have those Tattoo shows and Bar Rescue but cancel a good show like Southland great what’s next Watch a vunch of kids picking their nose for 30 minutes?
    Thanks TNT

  33. Shaun Means says:

I’m in complete mourning. Best show on TV, hands down!!

  34. Sure they cancelled it…it was a great, intelligent and well-written show that made you love the characters. Probably in a hurry to replace it with some mindless reality show. I am so over the networks catering to ignorant minds. Makes me want to not start another new show. Shame on TNT!!!!!!!!!

  35. This freaking sucks, Southland is one of my all time favorite shows, looks like its time go get the DVDs

  36. Once you have a quality show and it’s lauded by critics, you know it’s not long it will disappear.

    • Incognito Needmyjobtoomuch says:

We can’t have anything shot in LA be too successful can we? That would destroy the party line that it is just too expensive to produce anything quality in California.

  37. Rob Luongo says:

Best show around .. 5 seasons are much too short .. The last episode spelled it all out . Great cast , best drama and best scenery around .. TNT could have kept the show alive a little longer .. A lot of people are very disappointed with the decision of TNT to let it go soo early . Best wishes to the cast.

  38. Gene Soher says:

Once John was shot it spelled the end of Southland. It shall stand with “Hill ST. Blues”, and other defining dramas that have been on television. Congratulations to all involved for producing a truly extraordinary show. By the way, Anthony Ruvivar , Regina King and “john”, should all be considered for awards.
