Sluggish Friday Ratings Start CBS Drama

Ex-Tuesday show runs third in demos; ABC tops in young adults as 'Shark Tank' hits 5-month high

CBS rookie drama “Vegas” is looking like even more of a long shot to return for a second season after a sluggish debut on its new night Friday. ABC won the night in demos as “Shark Tank” hit five-month highs and both “Happy Endings” and “20/20″ were on the rise.

“Vegas,” the 1960s-set series starring Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis, averaged a 0.9 rating/3 share in adults 18-49 and 7.6 million viewers overall, according to preliminary Nielsen estimates; it had earned a 1.5 demo rating in its final Tuesday airing, behind the popular “NCIS: Los Angeles.”

While no series transferring from Tuesday to a lower-watched night like Friday would be expected to produce as high of ratings, “Vegas” looked particularly shaky given that CBS performed well both at 8 p.m. with “Undercover Boss” (1.6/6 in 18-49, 8.5 million viewers overall) and at 10 p.m. with “Blue Bloods” (1.4/5 in 18-49, 10.8 million viewers overall).

“Vegas” ran a distant third for its hour in both adults 18-49 and 25-54 (1.5/4) while winning in total viewers. CBS dominated in total viewers for the night and finished a tick behind ABC for the lead in adults 25-54.

The Eye opened the season on Fridays at 9 with “Made in Jersey” and quickly shifted to “CSI: NY” after the former struggled. If “Vegas” doesn’t pick up in the next few weeks, it’s a pretty safe bet that the net will go in a different direction in the fall.

Elsewhere, it was a good night for ABC as “Shark Tank” (2.1/7 in 18-49, 6.8 million viewers overall) posted its highest demo rating since early November and its second best ever. And “20/20″ won in 18-49 at 10 p.m. (1.8/6 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall), also hitting a five-monh high. Opening the night, back-to-back original episodes of “Happy Endings” averaged a 1.05 in 18-49 (1.1 at 8 p.m. and 1.0 at 8:30) and 3.0 million viewers overall — up from its Friday premiere of 0.8 in the demo and 2.6 million viewers overall.

NBC had another solid performance by “Grimm” (1.5/5 in 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall), a show that fares particularly well in DVR playback. But it didn’t do much on either side of it with “Fashion Star” at 8 (0.6/2 in 18-49, 2.6 million viewers overall) or “Rock Center” at 10 (0.7/2 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall).

Fox was quiet with an encore “Kitchen Nightmares” (0.7/3 in 18-49, 2.2 million viewers overall) and an original episode of struggling sophomore drama “Touch” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall).
