Gandolfini will retain exec producer credit

Robert De Niro will take over the late James Gandolfini’s role in HBO limited series “Criminal Justice,” the network confirmed Wednesday.

Gandolfini, who passed away in June, was to star in the seven-hour series, for which he will retain a posthumous exec producer credit. Steven Zallian, who is directing the debut episode, and writer Richard Price are also exec producing with Peter Moffat (who created the BBC series on which “Criminal Justice” is based), Jane Tranter of BBC Worldwide and Jane Rosenthal of Tribeca.

De Niro will play a New York ambulance-chasing attorney who gets in too deep when a Pakistani (Riz Ahmed) is accused of murder.

Deadline originally reported the news of De Niro’s casting.
