Dark laffer is Showtime's third pilot pickup this year

Showtime is expected to announce on Tuesday a pilot pickup for “Trending Down,” a comedy starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hoffman will also exec produce the project through his Cooper Town Prods.

The dark comedy, penned by Shalom Auslander, is billed as a blistering attack on our youth-obsessed culture. Hoffman will topline as Thom Payne, a man facing his own obsolescence after his advertising agency is taken over.

Auslander, Hoffman’s producing partner Emily Ziff and Ken Kwapis will also exec produce.

Pilot order will mark the third pickup for Showtime this year, and the first project announcement for Hoffman following his admission into rehab in May.
