'The Originals' draws its largest audience yet; ABC's 'Goldbergs' builds on 'SHIELD' repeat

On a night when the CBS dramas and ABC’s “Agents of SHIELD” aired repeats, NBC cruised to victory in key demos Tuesday behind winning performances from “The Biggest Loser,” “The Voice” and “Chicago Fire” — all of which were on the rise from the previous week.

CW also seemed to take advantage of the softer drama competition, as “The Originals” and “Supernatural” matched or set season highs in most key demos while drawing the net’s largest overall audience on a Tuesday in more than five years.

For NBC, “The Biggest Loser” (2.0 rating/6 share in adults 18-49, 6.7 million viewers overall) won its hour in 18-49 and 25-54, matching last week’s 18-49 score for its best in four weeks. It was followed by an eliminations episode of “The Voice” (3.3/9 in 18-49, 11.9 million viewers overall), which rose 10% week to week for a three-week high, and “Chicago Fire” (2.3/7 in 18-49, 8.2 million viewers overall), also up 10% and at its highest demo rating since Oct. 15.

Fox aired originals of “Dads” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (1.6/5 in 18-49, 3.7 million viewers overall) and “The Mindy Project” (1.2/3 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall) and a repeat of “New Girl” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.1 million viewers overall). “Dads” and “Brooklyn” grew 17% and 7%, respectively, from last week, and the latter ranking as the night’s top comedy in 18-49. “Mindy” was down 14% from last week when it had an original “New Girl” lead-in and faced no ABC comedy competition.

At ABC, a repeat of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall) was followed by “The Goldbergs” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall), which was on the low side but did build by more than 50% on its “SHIELD” demo lead-in and easily beat the repeat “New Girl” in its timeslot. “Trophy Wife” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall) followed at 9:30 p.m., finishing a tick behind Fox’s “Mindy Project” in 18-49 while beating it in 25-54 and total viewers.

At 10 p.m., the season premiere of “What Would You Do?” did a 1.0/3 in 18-49, 3.2 million viewers overall.

CBS aired encores of “NCIS” (1.6/5 in 18-49, 12.4 million viewers overall), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 9.5 million viewers overall) and “Person of Interest” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 8.5 million viewers overall) but still finished second in 25-54 while winning the night in total viewers.

At CW, original episodes of “The Originals” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall) and “Supernatural” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall) helped the net tie with ABC in adults 18-49 and finish ahead of both ABC and CBS in adults 18-34. “Supernatural” was up from last week when it had a different lead-in, matching its season high in 18-49 and 18-34 (1.1/4) and beating Fox’s comedies in the hour in total viewers.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: NBC, 2.6/7; CBS, 1.4/4; Fox, 1.3/4; ABC, 1.1/3; CW and Univision, 1.1/3; Telemundo, 0.6/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 10.1 million; NBC, 9.0 million; ABC, 3.6 million; Fox, 2.9 million; Univision, 2.8 million; CW, 2.4 million; Telemundo, 1.5 million.
