Program represents another effort by MTV to break back into the afternoon strip space

MTV is getting into the singing competition biz with “Bachelor” franchise king Mike Fleiss.

Hailing from Next Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon TV, “Copycat” will be a halfhour afternoon strip competition where singers battle it out on stage for a cash prize. Each contestant will do their best to sound like their favorite recording artist, and the studio audience will vote on each performance.

MTV has ordered the series to production, with Fleiss exec producing with Brendon Carter. Matt Laesch will co-exec produce.

News of “Copycat” continues MTV’s push back into the afternoon strip space, which includes Rob Dyrdek’s cooking competition show “Snackdown.” MTV has also yet to plant a true flag in the singing competition space since 2008’s “Rock the Cradle.” Past music-centric competition programs have included the “Making the Band” franchise.
