Matt Cherniss Appointed Prez of WGN

TV vet joins Tribune after logging years at FX, Fox and Warner Bros.

Matt Cherniss has been tapped as president and general manager of WGN America and the newly forged Tribune Studios.

Cherniss joins Tribune Company from Warner Bros., where he served as senior veep of production, overseeing development and production on pics including “300: Rise of an Empire.”

In his new post at WGN and Tribune Studios, Cherniss will over see development of original content for Tribune and WGN’s 23 local TV stations.

He will report to Tribune CEO Peter Liguori. Pair share a history at FX, where Liguori ran the net and Cherniss oversaw original programming that included “Damages” and “Nip/Tuck.” Cherniss has also served as exec veep of programming for Fox Broadcasting Company.

“Matt is known within the creative community for his incredible eye for high-quality, commercial programming, as well as his integrity as a partner and programmer,” Liguori said. “WGN America and our 23 local stations reach 80 percent of the country and provide a powerful marketing and distribution platform, creating value for programmers, advertisers and most important, audiences. Tribune Studios will enable us to participate in the value this platform delivers by developing original content that we own or co-own.”

Separately, Tribune has appointed Julio Marenghi president of broadcast media sales. He will oversee all aspects of ad-sales for Tribune’s group of TV stations and WGN Radio in Chicago, and will report to Larry Wert, topper of broadcast media.
