Project to revisit character brought to HBO in 1998 TV film 'Always Outnumbered'

Laurence Fishburne is joining forces with HBO to bring back to life character Socrates Fortlow from the net’s 1998 pic “Always Outnumbered” — this time, as a TV series.

HBO is developing “The Right Mistake,” a drama with Fishburne attached to star and produce, Variety has confirmed. Project will continue to follow Fortlow, who Fishburne played in the ’98 telepic, an ex-con seeking redemption after a 27-year stint in prison. Walter Mosley’s series of novels (which includes “Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned”) will serve as the basis for the TV project and the extended exploration of Fortlow.

Mosley will co-write the project with Patrick Charles. Mosley will also exec produce “Right Mistake,” along with Helen Sugland, Diane Houslin and Tom Russo.

Fox TV Studios and Fishburne’s Cinema Gypsy Prods. will produce “Right Mistake.” Fishburne’s banner holds a first-look cable deal with the studio.

Deadline was first to report on the drama project.
