HBO Nabs Television Rights to Madeleine Sackler’s ‘Dangerous Acts’

Documentary premieres Sept. 8 at Toronto Film Festival

HBO Documentary Films has bought U.S. television rights to Madeleine Sackler’s docu “Dangerous Acts Starring the Unstable Elements of Belarus,” which premieres Sept. 8 at the Toronto Film Fest. Docu will debut on HBO next year.

“Dangerous Acts,” which is executive produced by Andrea Meditch (“Man on Wire”), showcases the work of the award-winning Belarus Free Theater group, the org founded in 2005 by Natalia Kaliada, Vladimir Shcherban and Nicolai Khalezin that exposes sociopolitical issues in their home country of Belarus.

“HBO is the perfect home for ‘Dangerous Acts,’ ” says Sackler, who also produced the film. “After working on this film in secret for the last three years because of the censorship in Belarus, we are very excited to be sharing it with audiences on HBO.”

Josh Braun of Submarine negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.

Toronto Film Fest runs Sept. 5-15.
