HBO Eyeing Spielberg’s Napoleon Mini Based on Kubrick Script

Stanley Kubrick HBO Steven Spielberg

Baz Lurhmann being courted to direct the period project

Napoleon Bonaparte may be getting the pay TV treatment, as HBO is in early talks to acquire a Steven Spielberg-produced miniseries centering on the infamous French leader.

Development of the mini, which is based on a 1961 screenplay penned by Stanley Kubrick, was announced by Spielberg in March during an interview on French TV net Canal Plus.

Baz Luhrmann (“The Great Gatsby”) is in discussions to helm the miniseries for HBO, as Deadline first reported today.

At this time, no deals are in place for the Napoleon project at HBO.

Word that HBO may nab Spielberg’s mini arrives as Warner Bros. courts Leonardo DiCaprio for an untitled Napoleon biopic. Rupert Sanders has signed on to direct the Warner feature, with Jeremy Doner serving as scribe.
