FX Greenlights George Lopez Comedy From

'Saint George,' from Wind Dancer Films, to be produced under the 10/90 model

George Lopez’s latest sitcom venture has landed at FX.

The cabler has ordered 10 segs of “Saint George,” which will be produced by Lionsgate TV and Debmar-Mercury under Debmar’s trademark “10/90″ model.  That allows FX to quickly order 90 additional episodes of the show so long as the initial 10-episode run hits predetermined ratings targets.

Multi-cam laffer features  Lopez as a  recently divorced, working class Mexican-American turned successful entrepreneur juggling the demands of his ex-wife, 11-year-old son and overbearing family members.

Lopez co-created the series with Matt Williams and David McFadzean, who are sitcom vets (“Home Improvement”) and partners in Wind Dancer Films, which is producing along with 3 Arts Entertainment.

Lopez, Williams and McFadzean will exec produce along with Michael Rotenberg, Dete Meserve and Judd Payne. Production is skedded to begin in August. FX has yet to specify a premiere date.

FX is already in biz with Debmar on the Charlie Sheen laffer “Anger Management,” which earned its 90-episode back order last year. “Anger’s” ratings have softened since its bow, but FX is clearly not shying away from 10/90 experiments with Debmar.

“The 10/90 model requires a unique individual who has the ability to pull off this kind of daunting schedule. George is that guy and we couldn’t be happier that he chose FX as the home for his new project,” said FX Networks exec veep Chuck Saftler.

George Lopez’s broad appeal and strong following from the rapidly growing Hispanic audience, combined with the unmatched experience and track record of Matt and David, makes us extremely confident they can deliver our next big hit,” said Debmar co-prexies Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein.

The goal of the 10/90 format is to accelerate the typical series production sked to save money and allow the show to bow in off-network syndication sooner than a typical sitcom. If the show goes the distance on FX, “Saint George” would be available as an off-net buy for local TV stations by fall 2015.

Lopez is tailor-made for the Debmar formula given the high profile and built-in fan following he brings to the show. He previously toplined the ABC domestic comedy “George Lopez” from 2002-2007 and had a nearly two-year run as host of the TBS latenight variety show “Lopez Tonight” in 2009-2011.
