Series order continues Fox's development momentum with alums of NBC's 'Saturday Night Live'

Fox has ordered a multi-cam comedy from John Mulaney and Lorne Michaels to series, it was announced today.

The ensemble laffer, titled “Mulaney,” is created and written by Mulaney and was originally developed at NBC last year before moving to Fox. Gotham-set show is based on the life and stand-up comedy of Mulaney, and follows an aspiring comedian as he comes of age under the influence of his boss, roommates and neighbors.

Mulaney, a former “Saturday Night Live” scribe, will topline the series, and exec produce alongside “SNL’s” Lorne Michaels. Andy Ackerman will direct the pilot.

“SNL” alum Martin Short is also on board to co-star as Mulaney’s boss.

“John is one of the sharpest and most skilled next-generation comedic voices out there, who also happens to be surrounded by the best of the best on this new show,” said Kevin Reilly, chairman of entertainment at Fox. “I am personally thrilled to be working with Lorne Michaels again, a friend and show business hero who knows better than anyone how to build a show around talent. Add in the comedy magic of Marty Short and the seasoned hand of Andy Ackerman, and I believe we have the makings of something really special here.”

Universal TV will produce “Mulaney” along with Lorne’s Broadway Video and 3 Arts Entertainment. David Miner, Dave Becky, Andrew Singer and Ackerman will exec produce with Mulaney and Michaels.

“Mulaney” is another Fox project to surface with a serious “SNL” connection. Yesterday, the net ordered a pilot for a Will Forte-created comedy titled “The Last Man On Earth.” In August, Fox offered a series commitment to a Tina Fey-produced comedy, as well. Finally, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” starring “SNL” vet Andy Samberg currently airs on Fox.
