‘Downton Abbey’ Season 4 Trailer: Miss Mary All Dressed in Black

The sartorial splendor in British period drama “Downton Abbey” will continue in season four.

Still, as this early trailer for the new season shows, it’s obvious costume designer Caroline McCall and crew needed to concentrate on a certain color for Michelle Dockery’s (spoiler!) mourning Lady Mary: black.

But as Mary grieves for husband Matthew (Dan Stevens) and figures out a life for her and their son, some of the other Crawleys seem to be rushing into the Jazz Age of the 1920s. Changes are afoot upstairs and downstairs at Downton Abbey, as hemlines shorten, music gets racier and (gasp!) a non-white character appear onscreen.

Season four of “Downton Abbey” airs in the U.S. starting at 9 p.m. Jan. 5 on PBS.
