Discovery Lionsgate

Mini to be based on trilogy of books by John Jakes

Though the network’s first scripted effort “Klondike” has yet to premiere, Discovery Channel continues to stock up on scripted projects, today announcing a miniseries to be produced by Lionsgate.

North and South” will be based on a trilogy of novels by the same name from John Jakes and center on Antebellum America and the Civil War. Mini will tell the story of two families — northern factory owners from Pennsylvania, and southern plantation owners — whose friendships and bonds are put to the test as they fight each other on the battlefields during the Civil War.

Announcement of the Lionsgate-produced mini follows the development of a miniseries from Scott Free Prods. set in 13th century Scotland, and production of “Klondike,” which is set to bow next year.

Jakes will serve as an exec producer on “North and South.” He is repped by Joel Gotler of IPG and Frank Curtis of Rembar & Curtis.
