‘Copper’ Cancelled by BBC America

Copper BBC Canceled

BBC America is pulling the plug on “Copper,” the network has confirmed to Variety.

Drama from Tom Fontana and Will Rokos debuted on the cabler in August 2012, and kicked off its second season this June. BBC America applauded the series’ season one ratings, but its second run failed to build significant buzz or viewership, especially when compared to sibling series “Orphan Black.”

Cable net felt that ending the show’s run was timely, given the plot structure of the program, as well.

“Copper” will air its series finale on Sept. 22. Drama is produced by Shaw Media and Cineflix Studios.

I agree ! Have all gone mad ???? Copper was a great show with a wonderful cast ! the stories were intriguing and historically based ! why keep inane drivel and cancel an excellent show like Copper ! I’s disgusting!

  2. Kirst says:

What is this madness show like Copper & The Fall are amazing and yet you can clearly cancel Copper to let these mindless idiots run the tv world that doesn’t no there head from there arse’s for some silky reality-based tv like the ridiculous show the Royals etc. I beg of any one out there consider bringing back Copper!

  3. branded72 says:

Amid all the vampire, werewolf, zombie, and vampire/werewolf/zombie series dominating the airwaves, indeed, let’s get rid of one of the truly original shows out there! Cheers, BBC!
Maybe as a replacement you could offer up another teenage angst driven series? Or, how about an additional series portraying the decadent, corrupt, incestuous nature of yet another “Royal” family, huh? There certainly aren’t enough of those.
Whatever you do, please, I’m begging you, do not give us anymore truly original series just so you can pull the rug from under our feet.
If you’re going to kowtow to the demographic of idiocy, please, don’t waste my time – nor any other fan of a brilliant series such as Copper – by beginning something grand just to stamp it out before the tale is told in it’s entirety.
    Much appreciated.

  4. Daisy says:

Come on!!! The good shows always get canceled! And this wasn’t just good it was the BEST!!! Can’t we get at least one more season of this masterpiece. This show was real and like nothing else out there. We the people, in order to keep our sanity, ask that you please give us the proper ending to this magnificent show!!!!

  5. samantha beville says:

BBC DOES IT AGAIN CANCELS A SHOW AND LEAVES YOU HANGING..I REFUSE TO WATCH ANOTHER SERIES FROM THEM..AWESOME SHOW WISH I KNEW WHAT HAPPENED..COULD HAVE ATLEAST CLOSED STORY LINES..DONE WITH BBC SHOWS

  6. Cathy says:

Please don’t cancel this show! We love it. Excellent acting, lots of action. Gritty realism. Please order up season 3!!!

  7. Stuart Arnhoff says:

Great stories, first-class acting, fun to watch, can’t wait for each new episode, but ZERO publicity for the show … WTF!? It’s different and better than anything else on TV! Will some other network PLEASE have the good sense to pick up this show?!

  8. I see Copper in France, and I love it !!! Please, don’t end it !! There are so many stories to tell more !!! It’s an amazing programm, with so great actors and a real atmosphere. Please, give us more !!!

  9. lainie k says:

BBC America ended it with a horrific cliffhanger, because even the writers didn’t know there wasn’t going to be a season 3. BBC committed an injustice on its viewers. They have also indicated that there is no chance for revival on their network for some reason.

  10. Talon Stamper says:

I can’t believe they cancelled this program. It was one of the most well done historical television series. I’m so sad right now. Please bring this show back!

  11. The Delivery Guy says:

Dahhhh… was looking forward to alternating between Copper and Ripper Street for at least a few years…. Boooo BBC, you were winning this Yank over, nearly half of “My Shows” are on BBCA…

  12. Phan says:

Wrong move. So much untold history, especially the inclusion of African Americans in multi-dimensional character development. I valued the BBC productions more highly.

  13. Copper captured New York city during the civil war and how the African people of the time were treated. What a shame they cancelled it. Let’s hope someone will do another historical program that people can learn from.
    .

  14. John Shealy says:

I truly enjoyed Copper both seasons. I love period pieces like this show and was amazed at the computer graphics that gave the impression of 19th century New York. 80% of what is currently on American TV is junk, especially reality shows of kiddie beauty queens, hillbillies hunting wild pigs, driving rigs across a frozen lake, and narcissistic 20 year olds in New Jersey! This is why I looked forward to Copper. BBCA blew it by canceling Copper, falling prey to the pre-teen impression we “all” want to only see duck call making fools.

  15. CMC says:

So disappointed. Great storyline and awesome cast. Please bring back Copper!

  16. Alice says:

OMG you have got to be kidding me! I love this show and I was looking forward to the story and character development to come. Please reconsider giving this show another chance!

  17. Jean Fothergill says:

Two seasons are not enough! Intelligent, engrossing and well-acted dramas are too rare to toss away.

  18. Shelley H. says:

Aaarggh! My husband and I both love Copper. I agree it was fabulous spring and summer programming. The show was a great perspective and something new. Also, you left it on a cliffhanger, a great setup and direction for the show’s third season. Reconsider..

  19. S Miller says:

I am disappointed and saddened to see that BBCA has cancelled one of my favorite TV series. Copper was a well written, scripted, acted and directed period piece. Perhaps BBCA. Could reconsider and bring it back for a third season on a different night. How could you expect to pull from the likes of Dexter and some of the other programming available on Sunday even in this the day and age of record now watch later. Copper makes a great programming choice for spring and summer viewing. I’m positive the writers have an abundance of story lines still to tell.

  20. martin says:

Damn it! Can’t these myopic t.v. execs see the forest ‘fore the trees? “Copper” is one of the few reasons to watch drama on the tube (the bulk of most t.v. programming being inane or just plain idiotic.) This show catered to an upscale, adult, INTELLIGENT viewership, and it deserves to come back for a new season. I really cared about these people! I feel the same as when M.A.S.H. left the air, but at least that show had a decent run.

    • Lynn haynes says:

Big big mistake bbc. Copper is one of the best shows on tv. Great now we can get caught
Up with the “the Botox injected housewives from wherever” on another station. Very disappointed

  21. Jake says:

While many stations are broadcasting “non-reality” nonsense, I thought I found a series that not only had good actors but was historically significant, and only after getting into the second season, they cancelled the best one…Copper! Television channels are like politicians…if you don’t like what they are giving you, vote them out! I’m voting BBC out of my programming until they bring Copper back!!!

  22. Christine says:

Another “Deadwood” situation. It just ends. Please reconsider continuing “Copper”!

    • BBC America has already cancelled Cooper. They ended it with a horrific cliffhanger, because even the writers didn’t know there wasn’t going to be a season 3. BBC committed an injustice on its viewers.

A most unhappy finish. But Otherwise carmine de sapio might never have existed… Tammany lives on!

  24. Janet Irish-Feltner says:

    Don’t Cancel COPPER, GREAT PROGRAM!!!

  25. Tammany Boss says:

When will TV executives learn to pay attention to time shift and netflix/Hulu viewing?

Copper was a strong link in the bbca lineup. Oh well. Whatever.

  26. ndnwmn says:

Cancelling Copper wad one stupid move, excellent show, faithful fans…One of the few decent shows on tv….Not happy here :-/

  27. Judy says:

Idiots…. Orphan Black …much later. Clearly America has no taste.

    • Ellen says:

Where do I send my email? Where do I sign the petition? This was one of the very best shows on TV–intelligent, great characters, terrific period setting, and historically accurate. I was looking forward to the rise of Boss Tweed and the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, which began in 1867. BBC-A has made a huge mistake here.

  28. Melissa says:

Shocked to see it was cancelled! Was my FAVORITE show on TV. Thought BBC was smarter than that. So much garbage on TV that’s still there – bring it back!!!

  29. Barry says:

    Canceled!!! Are you serious?

    • Jan Rasberry says:

I loved this series. Older, wealthier, and with lots of discernment. Why in heavens name would one cancel a series that has so much to offer, and leave such “crap” as reality TV for years on end? No wonder I’ve just about given us television and resorted to old-fashioned reading.

  30. Neesha says:

Darn auto correct!! It was suppose to be way too soon!!

  31. Neesha says:

It is a really good period piece. Cancelling it naughty too soon!!

  32. Mike Garrity says:

It was canceled too soon! The second season was better than the first! It should have gone through the Reconstruction Period, at least! Very disappointed!

  33. Dee Murray says:

I cannot believe this show was cancelled! And we were all left hanging! No resolutions, nothing!!! This show is smart, gritty and the characters are engaging – you really want to know what happens to them….I guess the ONE channel that I looked to for intelligent programming has succumbed to the American ideal that i’ts all about money and less about quality programming. SHAME ON YOU, BBC!!!! Perhaps, instead of running 12 hour Top Gear re-runs, you could get a kick in your saddle and remember WHY you’ve become so popular in the States…SMART TV for SMART people that don’t care who the next top model, singer, or entertainer is. People that don’t want to know if the Duggars are having yet another child or what the heck Honey Boo Boo is doing!!! We turn to YOU, BBC for television with teeth. I like Top Gear…don’t get me wrong…but cancelling such a quality show like Copper for “ratings” (that are probably inaccurate), is a blot on your record. Again: SHAME. Bring Copper back.

  34. Sheri says:

This was an original, historically accurate show. To cancel in the middle of the story is insane, but no one at BBC America is going to care what we think. There’s nothing else worth watching on that channel.

  35. Louise Ash says:

I am shocked and outraged. It was a great series and had everything going for it. If no buzz was created it is BBC America’s fault. Plus, the network isn’t widely available and not even on Roku. What happened to promoting quality productions?

  36. Think Copper a terrific show, couldn’t wait for each new episode. Please reconsider your decision.

  37. Gregory says:

I can not believe they cancelled the show. It was a well written and well acted show! They leave these idiotic reality tv shows on! I’m done with BBC! If the time slot did not work why not just change it.. All the executives at BBC are brain dead!

  38. sharon kurdzil says:

I am shocked that this show has been cancelled!! This is a great historical drama with good actors. Please reconsider there is so much more to be learned. The good programs always get cancelled but they keep crap reality shows forever..

  39. danielle nabozny says:

So often networks set programs up for failure by putting them into failure slots. But most commonly it has to do with what age groups are watching shows….if it is primarily an older group watching, well, they don’t want that – they want younger. As evidenced by Harriet’s Law. Seems as tho the majority of the younger groups want those stupid so called reality shows etc….But what a slap in the face for those involved in the show if they had already started taping the 3d season…

  40. Doug Strayer says:

What a horrible ending. Could they have left it at more terrible place? What happened to Eva? Will Robert Moorehouse flip out over his fathers final act of treachery? Why would Kevin Cochran who was usually smart, leave his black mail papers he got from General Donovan’s in such easy reach of someone else, when his future relied on having those papers as kind of a guarantee that he be left alone. Does he take up Eustace’s offer as Ward Boss? Is Eva dead? Was the baby Eva was carrying actually Kevin’s?

  41. Linda says:

Unbelievable ! It is by far one of the best shows I have ever watched and I have been watching TV for a long long long time.

  42. Steve H. says:

Stupid, stupid move BBCA. This was one of the most well crafted shows I’ve seen in years. I can’t believe how short sighted the company is.

  43. pam says:

Copper is by far the best show on TV. Why would BBC cancel it. Its writing direction and cast came together and created magic. Please Please Please dont cancel it.

  44. Caitlin says:

Somebody start a petition. Get this rolling. The material’s there, the viewers are there. It’s by far the best show they have on that channel, they’re fools to let it go!

  45. patty says:

This is the most gritty, well written drama on TV these days…what sort of bollocks is this? We cannot live without more Copper. I realize it makes some TV snobs feel uncomfortable at times but the truth of our past needs to be felt as gutterally as this show makes us feel….KEEP IT

  46. Sarah says:

I can’t believe they cancelled it so abruptly! Season 3 was already written when they told them – this story deserves a third season, to let it play out the way it was meant to! It’s one of our favorite shows on ANY channel, and I’ve lost respect for BBCA producers if they think that shows like this aren’t worth continuing.

  47. Claire says:

I cannot believe they cancelled this series! It was a well made historical series and I loved it. I also find it totally annoying they finished it with a clifhanger like that!

  48. Berni says:

Wait, so you leave viewers with a harrowing cliff hanger and then pfffttt the show is over? It is all set up for a third season. What a disappointment. I have what seems like 300 channels and 289 of them are showing crap. I finally had something intelligent (albeit brutal) to view. Insanity.

  49. S. D. says:

Wonderful show! That’s what networks do to the quality shows. Mindless comedies and shows stay on but the great ones go by the wayside. Loved the period sets and especially the fantastic actors and storylines. Will be sorely missed.

  50. J. L. says:

    That’s network thinking for you….crap!
