Cooper Joins NBCU Intl. Television Production

U.S. studios continue to beef up international activities

LONDON — NBCUniversal Intl. Television Production has tapped BBC Worldwide deputy CEO Sarah Cooper to the newly created role of chief operating officer.

At the U.S. studio she will help NBCU Intl. Television Production prexy Michael Edelstein drive more value from a content portfolio that includes “Downton Abbey,” produced by wholly owned subsidiary Carnival.

Cooper will have day-to-day operational responsibility for business and legal affairs, human resources, finance, merchandising and licensing, and format sales.

In common with competitors like Sony, NBCU Intl. Television continues to beef up its international activities.

Edelstein said: “Sarah Cooper has a vast array of international experience, and will be an invaluable asset as we continue to build NBCU Intl.  Television Production into the premiere destination for content creators working outside the United States.”

At BBC Worldwide Cooper led the org’s negotiations on international partnerships and joint ventures, and overseeing rights acquisitions across all media.

Two years ago, Cooper won the Women in Film & Television Barclays Corporate Business Award for outstanding business achievement.

Shows in production at NBCU Intl. Television include laffer “Family Tree,” an HBO-BBC collaboration, written and helmed by Christopher Guest and starring Chris O’Dowd, and made by NBCU-owned Lucky Giant; a reboot of “Dracula,” which is a co-production with Sky Living; and the fourth season of “Downton Abbey.”
