Bob Newhart will receive the Television Icon honor from the Broadcast Television Journalists Assn. at the third annual CriticsChoice Television Awards on June 10.

A longtime star in TV after a successful career in standup, Newhart is also contending for a guest comedy actor Emmy this year, thanks to his recent appearance on The Big Bang Theory. He has been nominated for six Emmys in his career, dating back to “The Bob Newhart Show” in 1962, but has never won.

“Bob Newhart has entertained us for more than five decades, not only as a fixture on our TV screens, but as someone who has placed an indelible stamp on the entertainment business,” said BTJA prexy Joey Berlin. “He is truly a legend, and we’re thrilled that he will be the recipient of the 2013 Critics’ Choice Television Icon Award.”

In addition, the CCTAs named six shows as most exciting new series, based on viewings of pilots and early episodes. They are FX’s “The Bridge,” ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD,” NBC’s “The Michael J. Fox Show,” CBS’ “Under the Dome” and Showtime’s “Masters of Sex” and “Ray Donovan.” Fox and CW were not represented.
