SBS takes free-TV rights in Oz to hot crime thriller

LONDON — Red Arrow Intl. has sold Australian free TV rights to SBS for hot BBC thriller “The Escape Artist.” eOne Hopscotch acquired the DVD and digital rights in Oz.

The three-part miniseries, which has attracted widespread praise from U.K. critics, stars David Tennant (“Doctor Who,” “Broadchurch”) as a defense lawyer who uses his talents to free the prime suspect in a horrific murder trial, only to find that this puts his family in danger.

The show was written by David Wolstencroft, and was produced for the BBC by Endor Productions’ Hilary Bevan Jones, who won a Primetime Emmy for “The Girl in the Café,” and Paul Frift.

“‘The Escape Artist’ has a fascinating premise with an exceptional cast and is a perfect fit for SBS, where we are committed to delivering the best international dramas to our audience,” said Peter Andrews, SBS head of network programming.

The drama has been picked up by Norway’s TV2 and Sweden’s TV4.
