Actress makes her singing debut in Bel Air for 'Last Vegas'

“There’s just a total boatload of crazy that goes with singing live for the first time when you’re 60 years old,” said Mary Steenburgen on stage Sunday night at Vibrato in Bel Air, “So I want to publicly apologize to Mr. Ted Danson for anything I might have said in the last week. In general it’s been pretty nuts at our house.”

Just prior to that confession, Steenburgen had performed the song “Cup of Trouble,” which she co-wrote for the film “Last Vegas,” with a beaming Danson, her husband of almost 20 years, leaning on every lyric, as well as Jon Turteltaub, the film’s director, Laura Dern, and Varese Sarabande Records producer Robert Townson, among those in attendance.

During the three-song mini set, Steenburgen was accompanied by singer/pianist John Proulx and trumpeter Chris Walden on flugelhorn, and even displayed a bit of accordion playing, which she also picked up rather recently. “I’m a late bloomer,” she admitted.

If Steenburgen is a Janie Come Lately as a chanteuse, she has been writing songs for six years, and even has a deal with Universal Music Publishing. “I have hundreds of songs,” she told Variety. “I don’t consider myself much of a singer. I’m a writer first.”

Just saw the movie Las Vegas. I expected knock out performances from Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, and Robert Di Nero and got them–but Mary Steenburgen gave one too, punctuated by her wonderful, beautiful singing (the fact she’s utterly gorgeous didn’t hurt her acting or singing). WOW! With those four in the cast it would be hard to go wrong, but in fact the movie was wonderfully written and produced. I give it 11 stars out of a possible 10.
