Marketing exec to serve as evp of UMG label

Longtime music marketing and promotion exec Charlie Walk has joined Universal Music Group’s Republic Records as executive vp.

In his new role, Walk will head Republic’s marketing, promotion and publicity departments, reporting directly to president Monte Lipman.

Walk joins Republic from JWALK, the New York-based advertising and marketing firm he founded in 2009 after nearly twenty years at Sony Music. He was elevated to president of Epic Records in 2006, overseeing such acts as Michael Jackson, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Ozzy Osbourne and Sade and developing talent like the Fray and Natasha Bedingfield.

He previously spent seven years as executive vp of marketing and promotion at Columbia Records, after a steady rise through the promotion ranks. He began his career at Sony in 1990 after graduation from Boston University School of Management.

Lipman said in a statement, “In the 25 years I’ve known him, it’s hard to imagine anyone more competitive, colorful, and fearless then Charlie Walk. With parallel trajectories early in our careers, I’ve always found myself competing against Charlie for nearly two decades as we both pursued common goals. More than the success he’s had as a record executive, I’m even more impressed with his entrepreneurial spirit and ability to launch a thriving business of his own, in the unforgiving world of advertising and marketing.”
