World Soundtrack Awards’ Nominations Include Danna, Desplat, Marianelli and Newman

'The Master's' Jonny Greenwood, snubbed by the Academy, will also compete at Ghent

In what amounts to a second chance to get some awards love after being locked out of the Academy’s score nominees for “The Master” last year, composer Jonny Greenwood is among the five who will vie for original film score of the year at the 13th annual World Soundtrack Awards on Oct. 19, the culmination of Film Festival Ghent, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Greenwood will compete with Dario Marianelli (“Anna Karenina”), Howard Shore (“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”), Thomas Newman (“Skyfall”) and Mychael Danna, who won the Oscar for “Life of Pi.”

Danna and Newman will also face off for film composer of the year, awarded for their body of work in the allotted time period, as well as Alexandre Desplat (“Argo,” “Renoir,” “Rise of the Guardians,” “Zero Dark Thirty”), James Newton Howard (“After Earth,” “The Bourne Legacy”) and Danny Elfman (“Frankenweenie,” “Hitchcock,” “Oz the Great and Powerful,” “Promised Land,” “Silver Linings Playbook”).

The category of original song written directly for film is the one area in which works from films released in 2013 make an appearance, including “Young & Beautiful” from “The Great Gatsby,” with music & lyrics by Lana Del Rey & Rick Nowels, and the title tune from “Oblivion” (music & lyrics by Anthony Gonzalez and Susanne Sundfor). The other nominees include Dan Romer & Benh Zeitlin for “The Bathtub” from “Beasts of the Southern Wild”; Danna and Bombay Jayashri for “Pi’s Lullaby” (“Life of Pi”); and Adele & Paul Epworth for the title tune from “Skyfall.”

The music component of Ghent, which is usually concentrated in the last four days of the fest, will also be highlighted by a concert of Desplat’s music, which will take place during the World Soundtrack Awards. The highly prolific composer has earned five Oscar nominations and five World Soundtrack Awards.

As part of the festivities, the fest’s 40th anniversary will be celebrated with 40 one-minute compositions contributed by 40 different composers that will be performed live. Among those who are contributing are Danna and fellow Oscar winners Marianelli, Rachel Portman, Gustavo Santaolalla and Gabriel Yared.

Also at the ceremony, this year’s lifetime achievement award will be presented to Italian composer Riz Ortolani, whose work appears in a number of Quentin Tarantino films, including “Django Unchained,” and scored such pics as “Brother Sun, Sister Moon,” “The Valachi Papers” and “The Voyeur.”

Also on tap for Oct. 17 is a concert titled “Martin Scorsese: Music by Bernard Herrmann, Howard Shore, Elmer Bernstein, Philip Glass, Peter Gabriel and Others,” with works from “Taxi Driver,” “Cape Fear,” “Gangs of New York,” “The Aviator,” “The Departed” and “Hugo” being performed by the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Dirk Brosse.

The WSA Academy comprises more than 350 composers, film professionals, record label execs and other reps of the film music business.
