'Friends' producer-director to oversee expansion of school's showbiz program

Boston-based Emerson College has tapped “Friends” exec producer Kevin Bright to serve as senior exec director of the college’s Los Angeles Center.

Bright will alight from Emerson’s Board of Trustees, of which he’s been an active member since 2003. In his new role, the Emmy Award-winning producer will form partnerships with industryites to develop programs and generate mentor opportunities, as well as engage Emerson’s academic leadership to cultivate L.A.-based courses.

“Emerson is already influential and well-known in Los Angeles,” Bright said. “The college’s ability to make positive contributions to the industry, to the community, to our Hollywood neighbors and to the city of L.A. will now be limited only by our imaginations.”

Bright acquisition marks the first step toward building a Los Angeles Center exec team to work with Emerson’s East Coast-based faculty. Team will include current L.A. program exec director Jim Lane, a founding academic dean, a director of L.A. graduate and professional studies and a swath of other key appointments. Search for the founding academic dean is the current priority.

The Los Angeles Center is under construction on Sunset Boulevard and slated to bow in January 2014. Emerson’s Los Angeles Center will expand the college’s slate of pro internships at TV and film studios, music companies, media outlets and marketing agencies. Center will also create a permanent home for Emerson College in Los Angeles, and new programs will be created to attract graduate students, mid-career pro and industry execs from around the globe.

Bright has been a generous benefactor to Emerson in the past, establishing the Bright Family Screening Room in the College’s Paramount Center. A 1976 Emerson grad, Bright received an honorary degree from the college in 2011 and, in 2006, was named exec artist-in-residence.

Bright’s other credits include Martin Mull’s HBO laffer “The History of White People in America,” as well as HBO specials starring Robin Williams, Harry Shearer and Paul Shaffer.
