Tom Hanks Among Winners of Theater World Awards

"Lucky Guy" - Best Play

Tom Sturridge, Yvonne Strahovski also on the list of a dozen actors making N.Y. stage debut

The legit awards season has barely begun, but Tony nominee Tom Hanks has already notched one trophy to take home with him once his toplining stint in Broadway play “Lucky Guy” ends: The Theater World Award, handed out every year to six actors and six actresses making Broadway or Off Broadway debuts.

Hanks is one of the 12 winners of the 2013 kudos, along with Tom Sturridge, the “Orphans” thesp who is in the lead actor Tony race with Hanks, and Yvonne Strahovski (“Chuck,” “Dexter”), who starred earlier this year in Lincoln Center Theater’s revival of “Lucky Guy.”

A number of current Tony nominees made the Theater World list, including Bertie Carvel (“Matilda”), Shalita Grant (“Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike”), Valisia LeKae (“Motown”), Rob McClure (“Chaplin”) and Keala Settle (“Hands on a Hardbody”). Two thesps from the Public Theater’s Off Broadway bow of “Here Lies Love,” Ruthie Ann Miles and Conrad Ricamora, also made the cut for their perfs in the David Byrne-Fatboy Slim tuner. Carrie Coon (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”) and Brandon J. Dirden (“The Piano Lesson”) rounded out the list.

The Dorothy Loudon Award, a special kudo not necessarily for a debut perf, went to Jonny Orisni, who co-stars with Tony nominee Nathan Lane in “The Nance.” Alan Alda picks up the John Willis Award for lifetime achievement.

Established in 1945, the Theater World Awards were founded by Willis, then the editor in chief of legit yearbook Theater World (and its companion bigscreen edition, Screen World). Award recipients are selected by a pool of Gotham theater journos.

The 2013 ceremony is set for June 3 at Broadway’s Music Box Theater.
