‘Phantom’ Musical Hits the Road Again

'Phantom' Musical Hits the Road Again

New tour of musical will launch in November

Long-running tuner “The Phantom of the Opera” will embark on a new North American tour this fall, launching a road production of the re-imagined staging that is currently playing a tour in the U.K.

News from “Phantom” reps the latest in what is becoming something of a renaissance for Brit megamusicals from the 1980s, fueled in part by the success of the film adaptation of “Les Miserables.” The North American tour of “Les Mis” that launched in 2010 was, like this new “Phantom,” a retooled production that differed from the iconic Broadway original. With road B.O. pumped by the movie and its attendant marketing campaign, that incarnation of “Les Mis” was just announced for a Broadway berth in spring 2014.

The Main Stem production of “Phantom,” meanwhile, has been running for 25 years, and the original London production for 26. The tuner also has outposts in Japan, Korea and Hungary.

Both “Phantom” and “Les Mis” are produced by U.K. impresario Cameron Mackintosh, one of the pioneers of the international producing model that has parlayed successful legit titles — such as “Phantom” and “Les Mis,” and now including “Wicked” and “The Lion King” – into globally recognized properties.

Touring production of “Phantom” is helmed by Laurence Connor, also one of the directors of the upcoming Rialto staging of “Les Mis.” Design team includes Paul Brown (set), Paule Contable (lights) and Mick Potter (sound), incorporating the original costumes by the late Maria Bjornson.

“Phantom” will launch the  tour in Providence, R.I. in November.
