"Pippin" - Revival, Performance by an

'Pippin' racks up seven awards from out-of-town media writers; 'Kinky Boots' takes three

The Broadway revival of “Pippin” scored seven awards from the Outer Critics Circle, with the musical notching kudos for musical revival, director (Diane Paulus) and lead actress in a musical (Patina Miller), among others.

Kinky Boots” followed with three trophies, including the one for new Broadway musical, while that tuner’s major Tony competish, “Matilda,” took two.

As with all the awards handed out in the run-up to the Tonys, the Outer Critics’ tally is far from a reliable barometer of the outcome of upcoming Tony races. Still, it’s notable that in many major OCC award categories, the winner was a current nominee selected from a pool of nominees that were relatively close reflections of their Tony competition.

So “Kinky Boots” bested “Matilda” for new Rialto musical, score (Cyndi Lauper), and lead actor, with that trophy going to Billy Porter for his perf as drag queen Lola in “Kinky” over Bertie Carvel for his own cross-dressing role as a monstrous headmistress. “Matilda” won for book (Dennis Kelly) and set (Rob Howell).

The haul for “Pippin” also included features actress (Andrea Martin), featured actor (Terrence Mann), choreography (Chet Walker) and lights (Kenneth Posner).

Other winners in the acting races included leads Nathan Lane for “The Nance” (picked over fellow Tony contenders Tom Hanks, Tracy Letts and David Hyde Pierce) and  Cicely Tyson for “The Trip to Bountiful.” The two thesps to win featured awards for perfs in a play, Tom Sturridge (“Orphans”) and Kristine Nielsen (“Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike”), are also in the mix for Tonys, but have been slotted into leading thesp races for that round of kudos.

Awards ceremony for the Outer Critics, a group of legit journos who cover New York theater for outlets based outside of Gotham, is set for May 23 at Sardi’s.
