MacKinnon to direct ‘Lying Lesson’

Director replaces Shapiro on Off Broadway play

“Clybourne Park” helmer Pam MacKinnon has signed on to direct the “The Lying Lesson,” Atlantic Theater Company’s world preem production of a play by Craig Lucas.

Carol Kane, previously announced to topline the show, will be joined by Mickey Sumner (“Frances Ha”) in the tale of a woman who may or may not be Bette Davis looking to buy a house in smalltown Maine. Sumner portrays a local woman who may or may not have ever heard of the Hollywood star.

MacKinnon, whose staging of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” is currently playing on the Rialto, replaces Anna D. Shapiro (“August: Osage County”) on the project. Shapiro’s now unavailable to helm the springtime run due to a scheduling conflict, according to reps for the Atlantic.

“Lying Lesson” begins previews Feb. 20 ahead of a March 13 opening at the Atlantic.
