Pandora Co-produces Rejtman’s ‘Two Gun Shots’

Rejtman's theatrical comeback typically mixes drama and comedy

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain — Germany’s Pandora is co-producing “Two Gun Shots,” the feature comeback from Martin Rejtman, one of the founders of the so-called New Argentine Cinema, whose 1992 debut, “Rapado,” had a large impact on directors such as Pablo Trapero, Lucrecia Martel and Adrian Caetano.

Pandora’s Christoph Friedel, who was in San Sebastian on the lookout for new projects, confirmed to Variety his participation as co-producer on the film.

Violeta Bava, who is lead-producing the pic for Argentina’s Ruda Cine alongside biz partner Rosa Martinez Rivero, told Variety that the other co-producers are Jan van der Zanden for the Netherlands’ Waterland Film and Bruno Bettati for Chile’s Jirafa. Ilse Hughan of the Netherlands’ Fortuna Films is associate producer.

An ensemble dramedy with a veiled sense of humor which is a Rejtman hallmark, his movie begins with the titular gun shots as a 16-year-old boy, without any apparent reason, shoots himself twice, but survives. It then records the somewhat comically bathetic consequences of the event, the biggest of which perhaps is that the family dog finds a new home.

“The consequences of a dramaric event aren’t necessarily dramatic,” Rejtman commented.

Rejtman’s first theatrical feature for 10 years, “Two Gun Shots” has just gone ino production in Buenos Aires. Ruda Cine is also producing Milagros Mumenthaler’s “Pozo de aire” (pictured), which was presented at San Sebastina’s 2nd Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum earlier this week, eliciting interest from potential overseas partners.
