Zurich Film Festival Unveils Lineup

Toronto highlights and German-lingo gems drive the ninth edition

The Zurich Film Festival has announced their 2013 lineup, which features 122 films from 27 countries, 22 debut films and 16 world premieres.

“We want to grow at a healthy and moderate pace,” said Nadja Schildknecht, one of the festival’s directors. “A higher budget of 6.1 million francs ($6.5 million) made it possible to optimize our corporate structure as well as further develop the content of the program.”

The lineup includes James Gray’s “The Immigrant” starring Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix, Jonathon Teplitzky’s “The Railway Man” with Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman, Atom Egoyan’s “Devil’s Knot” with Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth, Jon S. Baird’s “Filth” with James McAvoy, Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity” with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney and biopic “Diana” by Oliver Hirschbiegel starring Naomi Watts.

The festival includes four competition categories — International Feature Film, International Documentary Film, German-Language Feature Film and Germany, Austria, Switzerland Documentary Film — with eight-12 films in each category. Filmmakers compete to win the Golden Eye award, and its new “small Golden Eye” for children’s films.

They also unveiled an extensive sidebar program, which includes a ZFF Masters at the Filmpodium, featuring producer Harvey Weinstein, directors Marc Forster, Markus Imhoof and Michael Haneke, and recipient of this year’s Career Achievement Award, Tim Bevan.

The festival will be held Sept. 26 through Oct. 6.
