Pre-holiday date meant to counterprogram family, awards fare
Mirroring Paramount’s fourth-quarter dating of “Anchorman: The Legend Continues,” Universal has slotted its comedy sequel “Dumb and Dumber To” for a wide release on Nov. 14, 2014.
The pre-Thanksgiving slot positions the film prior to the holidays as a counterprogrammer to the usual glut of family films and adult-targeted award contenders. Par raised a few eyebrows when it dated “Anchorman 2″ for a Dec. 20 release, though the film has been steadily building buzz with strong B.O. expectations.
“Dumb and Dumber To” reunites directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as the dim-witted pair Lloyd and Harry, who embark on a road trip to find a child Harry (Daniels) had unknowingly fathered in the past.
The Farrelly brothers are producing the film, currently in production, along with Riza Aziz, Charles Wessler, Bradley Thomas and Red Granite Pictures’ Joey McFarland.
In its date, “Dumb and Dumber To” launches alongside Sony’s untitled World War II drama, starring Brad Pitt and directed by David Ayer.
