Universal Nixes Early Imax Bow for ‘Oblivion’

Universal Nixes Early Imax Bow 'Oblivion'

Streamlined date gives added week in Imax for 'Jurassic Park' 3D redo

Ditching plans for an early Imax release, Universal will bow Tom Cruise sci-fier “Oblivion” April 19 at all Stateside locations.

Universal and Imax originally planned to launch “Oblivion” one week ahead of its wide release, catering to fanboys who are avid supporters of the large-screen exhibitor.

The move to a single-date domestic release is twofold: Firstly, the blanket bow gives Imax an extra week to play Universal’s “Jurassic Park” 3D conversion, which bows April 5, without eclipsing the March 29 U.S. release of Paramount’s “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” The change also gives Cruise more time to maximize his publicity efforts worldwide.

Imax had previous success with exclusive windows for “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” and “Skyfall.” Par will launch “Star Trek Into Darkness” May 15 in Imax, two days before the film’s nationwide release.

The one-shot release date still gives “Oblivion” two full weeks in Imax before “Iron Man 3” bows May 3 domestically.
