‘Unchained’ locks up overseas box office

Sony does well with another release, 'Skyfall' in top ranks

Continuing its overseas dominance, Sony’s “Django Unchained” scored $43.1 million over the Jan. 25-27 frame, pushing its international cume to $111.6 million, while another Sony title, “Skyfall,” was boosted by a whopping $34.4 million week from a single territory — China.

Still playing in 31 overseas markets, “Skyfall” totaled $35.4 million in its 14th frame, lifting its international cume to $776.6 million. The pic’s worldwide total now stands at nearly $1.08 billion, making the Bondpic the eighth-highest grossing film of all time.

For “Django,” Germany contributed $8.1 million in its second week, down just 11%, boosting its cume to $21 million in the territory. That equals the market’s entire total for 2009’s “Inglourious Basterds.” France, meanwhile, added $6.6 million for a cume of $16.4 million. The pic grossed $4.2 million in its opening Australian frame.

Russia has been one of the few disappointments for “Django,” with the film falling 43% in its second frame. The pic, which has cumed $10 million in the territory, has been hit especially hard by pirates taking advantage of the nearly monthlong gap between the pic’s Christmas Day U.S. bow via Weinstein Co. and the Russian opening Jan. 18.

“Skyfall” suffered no apparent ill effects on its launch in China — the film’s final territory — more than two months after the pic’s Nov. 9 Stateside bow. The film outpaced the summer openings of “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” though those two films launched the same day on the mainland.

“Skyfall” will have to compete in China with “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” which bows Feb. 22 in the territory.
