Fox Searchlight has set a Dec. 27 U.S. release date for Steve McQueen’s “Twelve Years a Slave,” positioning the historical drama as a potential awards contender.
Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt star.
Based on Solomon Northrup’s 1853 nonfiction tome, New Regency pic stars Ejiofor as the author, a free man kidnapped in 1841 and sold into slavery in Louisiana. Cumberbatch will play a plantation owner who buys Ejiofor’s character.
McQueen co-wrote the script with John Ridley (“Red Tails”). Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Pitt produce for Plan B.
“Slave” is the second title set for Dec. 27, joining The Weinstein Co.’s “Grace of Monaco.”
