Tribeca nabs rights to ‘Richard’

Film unit acquires North American rights to coming-of-age tale

Tribeca Film has acquired North American rights from Protagonist Pictures for Irish director Lenny Abrahamson’s drama “What Richard Did.”

Tribeca Films plans a theatrical release in the spring, as well as a day-and-date VOD release.

The film took home five awards at last weekend’s Irish Film & Television Awards for film, firector, script, actor and editing.

Ed Guiney produces and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures exec produces. Script is written by Malcolm Campbell, adapted from Kevin Powers’ book “Bad Day in Blackrock.”

The film was funded by The Irish Film Board and Element Pictures, and opened in the U.K. earlier this year.

“Richard” is a coming-of-age tale starring Jack Reynor, Roisin Murphy, Sam Keeley and Lars Mikkelsen.

The deal was negotiated for Tribeca Film by Nick Savva and and Protagonist Pictures’ Mike Goodridge on behalf of the filmmakers.
