Tribeca Film Plants Outpost in U.K.

Fest's distrib will make six films available on VOD

LONDON — The Tribeca Film Festival brand is crossing the Atlantic to Blighty.

Fest chief creative officer Geoff Gilmore announced today that Tribeca Film, the distrib label of Tribeca Enterprises, will launch in the U.K. on April 16, offering six fest films on VOD.

“We launched Tribeca Film three years ago with the goal of giving independent filmmakers a platform to reach a broader audience,” said Gilmore. “Bringing these films to homes in the U.K. day-and-date with the festival in New York is the natural evolution of this offering.”

The news follows Tribeca’s April 2 announcement that it would use streaming and VOD services to give U.S. audiences access to seven features and four shorts from the line-up during the fest’s April 17-28 run.

“American audiences have really enjoyed being able to participate in the festival experience, not just in New York but from all the country,” said fest co-founder Robert De Niro. “We are looking forward to bringing these films to homes across the U.K.”

Gilmore says Tribeca sees a “shared kind of constituency” among global audiences for independent film. “To me this is the future of reaching audiences,” he told Variety.

The titles will include Daniel Algrant’s “Greetings From Tim Buckley” and Danny Mulheron’s “Fresh Meat.”

The pair are the only titles from this year’s program, with others including 2010 Tribeca preem “Monogamy,” 2009 docu “The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia” and two titles from 2012, “Rubberneck” and “Supporting Characters,” which stars Alex Karpovsky, familiar to U.K. auds from HBO skein “Girls.” Karpovsky also helmed “Rubberneck.”

“We choose films we thought would have universal resonance,” said Gilmore. He explained distrib rights were not difficult to extend and Tribeca Film is looking to move into broadcast and DVD “but we haven’t worked out the details on that yet.”

The initiative will run for eight weeks from April 16, the day before the fest gets underway in Gotham. The films will be available on demand via pay-per-view with Virgin Media and other digital platforms including iTunes, PlayStation and Xbox.

Gilmore is exploring the possibility of similar VOD platforms in other countries. He also hinted that Tribeca may be on the verge of announcing something new in terms of physical fest presence internationally in the next couple of months. The organization already partners on the five-day Doha Tribeca Film Festival in November.

The announcement coincides with another U.S. fest’s presence in Blighty — Sundance London’s sophomore session runs April 25-28.

Sundance London will unspool 21 features and nine shorts, mostly from the Sundance Film Festival’s program in Park City, Utah in January, as well as live music performances and discussions.
