‘Tracks’ Producer Recalls Film’s Journey to Screen

Story is well-known in Oz but pic, which will play in Toronto, is looking for a U.S. buyer.

Tracksproducer Emile Sherman is no stranger to the Lido.

The last time the Australian producer, who makes up one-half of the producing duo at See-Saw Films (“The King’s Speech”), hit Venice was with sexually graphic Michael Fassbender drama “Shame” in 2011.

This year, it’s a very different story, as the producer is in town with indie drama “Tracks,” which tells the tale of how a young woman, Robyn Davidson, traveled more than 1,678 miles through the Australian desert in 1977.

“The Painted Veil” helmer John Curran directs the pic, which is based on Davidson’s memoir of the same name. Mia Wasikowska stars with Adam Driver.

“It’s one of those books that is incredibly well-known in Australia,” said Sherman. “We always felt that it was one of the big Australian stories that hadn’t been told yet.”

See-Saw kept in touch with Davidson’s agent in the U.K. and waited patiently for the rights to come available as, he said, “we felt it was something worth waiting for.”

He added: “We were really drawn to this story because not only did Robyn achieve something off the Richter scale in walking across the desert, but it was the impetus behind it that interested us. It’s a story of great physical endurance and courage and at the same time it’s very much an internal story about someone finding themselves out there.”

HanWay Films, which reps international sales for the pic, has already inked deals with eOne (Alliance Films’ Brit arm Momentum Pictures, which was purchased by eOne earlier this year, had an output deal with See-Saw), Transmission for Australia and New Zealand, Ascot Elite for Switzerland and BIM for Italy.

These pre-sales combined with coin from Screen Australia and Aver Media completed the financing for the pic.

“Tracks,” which is also having its North American preem in Toronto next month, has yet to snag a U.S. distrib.
