Toronto: RAI Trade Nabs Timely Syria War Drama

RAI Trade has acquired world sales rights to Alessio Cremonini’s Syrian civil war-themed “Border,” which world premieres in Toronto’s Discovery section.

As President Obama prepares for military strikes in Syria, the impact of its civil war on its civilian population is a matter of worldwide concern.

Border” turns on two young sisters, both devout Muslims, who are suddenly forced to grab a few belongings and flee from Syria to Turkey after one’s husband deserts Bashar al-Assad’s forces to join the Free Syrian Army. They could well die in the attempt.

Though produced by Italy’s Memo Films with an Italian key crew, “Border” is based on true events, shot in Arabic. Sara El Debuch and Dana Keilani play the sisters.

Cremonini explored neighboring territory co-writing Severo Costanzo’s 2004 Locarno Golden Leopard winner “Private.” That pic was also a realistic war-zone set semi-thriller and eye-opener to the impact of armed conflict on a civilian population, here a Palestine family forced to billet Israeli troops.

At Toronto, RAI Trade is also selling “Intrepido: A Lonely Hero,” a portrait of Italy’s economic crisis from revered Italian auteur Gianni Amelio (“The Way We Laughed”), which world preemed in competition at Venice this week.
