Helmer re-teams with Goalpost for Australian political drama

Felony” director Matthew Saville is-reteaming with Goalpost Pictures to helm Australian political drama “Dark Victory.”

Goalpost topper Rosemary Blight told Variety the banner plans to shoot “Dark Victory” next year. The project is based on the book “Dark Victory: How a Government Lied its Way to Political Triumph” by David Marr and Marian Wilkinson.

“It’s sort of like ‘The Insider’ on the high seas,” she said.

A key part of the book deals with the Australian government’s refusal in 2001 to allow the Norwegian freighter Tampa — which was carrying 438 rescued refugees from a distressed fishing vessel — to enter Australian waters. The refugees were eventually taken to the island of Nauru and the Australian government was criticized by several countries for evading its human-rights responsibilities but its refusal to admit the refugees received strong support from Aussies in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the U.S.

“Felony,” produced by Goalpost and Benaroya Pictures, will have its world premiere Tuesday in the special presentations section at Toronto. Australian thesp Joel Edgerton stars with Tom Wilkinson and Jail Courtney; he also produces the police thriller with Saville directing from Edgerton’s own script.
