TORONTO: Martin Scorsese, Dean Devlin On Board ‘The Wannabe’

Arquette, Piazza, Imperioli star in New York-set drama

Martin Scorsese will executive produce and Dean Devlin’s Electric Entertainment will fully finance indie drama “The Wannabe,” starring Patricia Arquette, Vincent Piazza and Michael Imperioli.

The project, first announced last October, is being produced by Lizzie Nastro (“Bluebird”)  with Mike Gasparro. Nick Sandow is directing from his own script.

The story is set in New York City during the early 1990s with Piazza playing a man obsessed with mob culture who attempts to fix the jury in the trial of John Gotti. When his plot is foiled and he’s rejected by the ones he idolizes most, he sets off with a woman (Arquette), who is a neighborhood fixture.

Electric Entertainment is also executive producing along with Traction Media (“Short Term 12”).

Electric made the announcement on Thursday, the opening day of the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, as part of unveiling the launch of an international theatrical film and TV sales and acquisitions division with “The Wannabe” as its first project.

Devlin has hired veteran exec Sonia Mehandjiyska to run the new division, which will represent Electric’s original productions as well as third-party product. Mehandjiyska will introduce Electric’s slate to buyers at TIFF and the American Film Market.

Mehandjiyska was previously head of sales at Global Screen and has held posts at Gibraltar Entertainment, Lightning Entertainment and Echo Bridge, where she served as VP of international sales in their London office.

Electric recently wrapped its fifth and final season of TNT’s  drama “Leverage,” which was executive produced by Devlin, John Rogers, Chris Downey and Marc Roskin. Electric’s other television credits include TNT’s “The Librarian,” “The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines” and “The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice.” Along with Bryan Singer’s Bad Hat Harry production company, Electric produced SyFy Channel’s “The Triangle.”

Devlin is currently in pre-production on his feature directorial debut “Geostorm.” He is producing with Skydance Pictures’ David Ellison and Dana Goldberg and Electric Entertainment’s Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan.
