Toronto: Kristen Wiig's 'Hateship Loveship' Gets

IFC picks up family drama, also starring Pearce, Steinfeld

IFC Films has acquired U.S. rights to family drama “Hateship Loveship,” starring Kristen Wiig, Guy Pearce, Hailee Steinfeld, Nick Nolte, Christine Lahti, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Sami Gayle.

The deal closed 10 days after “Hateship” made its world premiere as a special presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film, directed by Liza Johnson from Mark Poirier’s script, was produced by Robert Ogden Barnum, Michael Benaroya, Jamin O’Brien, Dylan Sellers and Cassian Elwes and exec produced by Jacob Pechenik, Michael Raimondi and Abigail Disney.

Wiig stars as a housekeeper hired by Nolte’s character to serve as a primary caregiver to his granddaughter, played by  Steinfeld.

Justin Chang gave the film a positive review for Variety: “Adapted from Alice Munro’s short story about a shy, unsophisticated housekeeper who falls victim to a cruel prank with ultimately surprising consequences, this delicate and absorbing character study gets some unique performance mileage out of Wiig, infusing a potentially morose role with subtle oddball touches that keep things amusingly off-balance.”

The deal was negotiated by Arianna Bocco for IFC with UTA Independent Film Group and Cassian Elwes on behalf of the filmmakers.
