‘Mission: Impossible 5’: Tom Cruise officially signs on

Pic is still looking to lock down writer and director

After grossing more than $700 million at the worldwide box office, it seemed like a sure thing Paramount and Skydance would set up another installment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise and they have now made it official with Tom Cruise signing on to star and produce the fifth movie in the series.

Cruise would produce along with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, which produced the last two films. Deadline Hollywood broke the news.

Paramount and Skydance have not set a writer, director or start date yet.

The last installment, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” was helmed by Brad Bird with Jeremy Renner and Paul Patton joining Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt, in the film. No plot details have been revealed.

The CAA-repped Cruise was most recently seen in Universal’s sci-fi pic “Oblivion,” which has grossed more than $220 million world wide.

  1. A new Mission: Impossible and another Men In Black were announced recently. Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is a go and even a new Die Hard movie is on the works. ALL STARING THE ORIGINAL CAST. ALL MORE THAN 10 YEARS (at least) SINCE THE FIRST MOVIE. Let’s Get Angelina Jolie. back as Lara Croft in Tomb raider!
    Thank you!

  2. That is an over-worked and tired franchise already, and despite their finest intentions, these “MISSION IMPOSSIBLE” movies don’t come anywhere close to the original CBS series-and
Tom Cruise needs to find other original material to do,,because the MI movies are way too
unoriginal, and have run their course! now Tom Cruise wants to play “Napoleon Solo” in a planned
movie version of “THE MAN FROM UNCLE”-and that’s about as exiting as watching your toe nails
grow! time to ditch the remakes, and come up with better material, because classic TV simply has
no equals today-only desperate corporate execs, who just can’t come-up with anything new and
original,,which is where Tom Cruise is at,right now!

    • I hear you joe s yet as tom cruise is an over finished franchise plus as a person with a history of mind control w/ his religion. the freaky true/brainwashing is scary to me. when Katie holmes DIVCORCED tom in 11 days because Katie could expose tom to the public. I believe also tom’s adopted two children are brainwashed and Katie was never under the spell. I can’t separate the two.

  3. I wonder if Brnadt who was played by Jeremy Renner will be part of the cast. He was introduced as a poscible replacement for Cruise’s Ethan Hunt in the event Cruise chose not to return.I’m not sure about Ving Rames; I think Simon Pegg was ok and I think it’s taking a step back. And if Paula Patton is unavailable, I hope they consider MI3 co-star Maggie Q.

  4. This will work, but give Ving Rhames more to do than a five minute cameo. He and Tom Cruise been with the series since the beginning. Ethan and Luther are what part five needs.

  5. Hopefully Mission 5 goes into the realm of sci-fi with the use of psychic IMF agents and into alternate realities. The stunts, character and story elements have been done to death and the franchise needs a complete new approach!! INCEPTION is a MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE film set in the dream world and craps all over the first 3 Mission films. Number 5 has to be as inventive as INCEPTION. No more arms dealers. A sci-fi Mission film sounds inticing
