Visual effects pioneer Tim McGovern has come on board to direct and produce indie animated project “Tusk: Hannibal’s Favorite Elephant” for Gnosis Moving Pictures and Whisper Pictures.
Whisper Pictures CEO George Merkert will also produce and Gnosis CEO Darius Kamali will exec produce.
McGovern, the chief creative officer for Whisper, has visual effects credits on “Tron” “As Good as it Gets” and “Sin City 2” and won a special achievement Oscar in 1990 for the effects on “Total Recall,” a year before the category was created.
McGovern also wrote “Tusk,” the story of legendary military strategist Hannibal and his favorite elephant Surus, as they seek justice from the Romans. The project, set in 218 B.C., follows Surus and Hannibal as they lead an army of men and 37 African elephants over the Alps, and the connection that develops between man and animal.
McGovern was a founding senior VP at Sony Pictures Imageworks and Merkert was a former exec producer at the same company.
