‘Tiger’ tames Russia’s Golden Eagle

Helmer Shakhnaraov's WWII tale wins for film

MOSCOW

Helmer Karen Shakhnaraov’s mystical war film “White Tiger” — about a Red Army tank driver who survives 90% burns to become a Nazi hunter in WWII — was named best film at Russia’s Golden Eagle awards on Friday.

Shakhnaraov is also head of Mosfilm, Russia’s biggest film studios, where the Eagles ceremony was held on Friday.

“White Tiger” was Russia’s runner for the foreign language Oscar but failed to make the long list.

Best director went to Andrey Proshkin for “Horde,” about the ancient conflict between Christian Russia and Mongol invaders, financed by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Film also picked up best script for Yuri Arabov, cinematography for Yuri Raiski, costume design for Natalia Ivanova and art direction for Sergey Fevralov, who also worked on “White Tiger.”

Actor honors went to Danila Kozlovsky for his role as a cynical corporate executive in “Soulless.” Anna Mikhalkova nabbed actress laurels for “Love With a Focus.”

The Golden Eagles is one of two competing national film ceremonies, reflecting a broad split in the industry.

The National Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Russia hosts the Eagles. Modelled on the Golden Globes, it also gives awards for television and was founded in 2002 by director Nikita Mikhalkov.

The Russian Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences’ backs the Nikas, which were set up in 1987.
