‘Thor: The Dark World’ Pushes Disney Past Previous Global Box Office Record

'Iron Man 3,' 'Thor: the Dark World' lead the way

Thanks to Thor and his brother Loki, Walt Disney Studios is topping its previous global box office record of $3.791 billion, set in 2010.

Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” opened domestically last weekend with $85.7 million, lifting the worldwide box office to $348.5 million since its international release on Oct. 30.

Disney noted that it was the first studio to reach the $1 billion domestic box office milestone back in July, marking the eighth year in a row it has achieved the milestone.

In August, Disney reached the $2 billion international box office threshold for the fourth year in a row. It recently surpassed its previous all-time international box office record of $2.302 billion, also set in 2010.

Marvel’s “Iron Man 3,” which opened domestically May 3, has grossed $1.21 billion worldwide and become the year’s top-grossing film and the fifth highest-grossing film of all time.

Pixar’s “Monsters University,” which opened June 21, has grossed $744 million worldwide and Disney’s “Oz The Great and Powerful,” has cumed $493 million worldwide since it opened in March.

Disney has three titles left for 2013 — DreamWorks’ “Delivery Man” (Nov. 22), Disney’s “Frozen” (Nov. 27) and “Saving Mr. Banks” (Dec. 13).
