‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ tops Saturn noms

'Life of Pi,' 'Skyfall' also contend for multiple awards

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “Life of Pi” and “Skyfall” top this year’s Saturn Awards nominee list, which was revealed Tuesday by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.

Saturns honor genre work in film, TV and home entertainment, and oftentimes rally an eclectic mix of honorees.

“Hobbit” nabbed more noms than any pic, amassing nine, and “Looper,” “Argo” and “Les Miserables” are among others in contention for multiple statuettes.

WB is the frontrunner studio this year with 23 nods, followed by Sony and U with 14 apiece and Fox with 12.

Saturn Awards are known for its wide net of category groupings, which this year feature “The Impossible” vying for best horror/thriller, “Les Mis” joining the action/adventure pics and “Ted” crashing the fantasy category. Acadwill recognize indie pics for the first time, with a new category of contenders including “Robot and Frank,” “Compliance” and “Safety Not Guaranteed.”

“Fringe,” “Dexter” and “The Walking Dead” lead nominees on the TV side, joined by “Revolution,” which received four noms. Blighty imports “Doctor Who” and “Merlin” and Canada’s “Continuum” lend the small-screen groups a global perspective.

AMC leads nets with 11 noms, followed closely by Fox and TNT, which both have eight.

Best release, special edition, collection and TV skein round out the home entertainment categories.

Kudos will be presented in June, with date and location to be announced.
