Pic just won docu best-director award in Park City
And the Radius-TWC train rolls on.Already outpacing all distribs with four Sundance titles, Radius has just announced it picked up North American and French rights to “Cutie and the Boxer,” which moments ago won the U.S. documentary award for best director and is now slated for a 2013 release. Previous Radius doc pickup “Inequality for All” was awarded the U.S. documentary special jury award. “Cutie,” directed by first-time feature filmmaker Zachary Heinzerling, premiered in U.S. docu competition. Pic explores the 40-year love story of Japanese artists Ushio and Noriko Shinohara, who met and married in New York in the early 1970s. The roles of assistant and artist have since transformed; Ushio, now 80, is known for both boxing painting; Noriko, more than 20 years his junionr, has found her voice as an artist with a series of drawings — “Cutie and Bullie” — that depict their chaotic relationship. “The beauty and complexity of the Shinoharas’ love affair and their art is nothing short of stunning,” said Radius co-prexy Tom Quinn. “Exquisitely crafted, Zachary has made a mesmerizing and unforgettable portrait of artistic genius.” Quinn and Radius Jason Janego negotiated the deal with Submarine’s Josh Braun, Dan Braun and David Koh on behalf of the filmmakers.
