Studiocanal to produce, distrib, sell ‘Starbuck’

French remake of comedy hit rolls March 4

European film-TV group Studiocanal will co-produce, distribute in France and sell internationally a French remake of Canadian comedy hit “Starbuck.”

DreamWorks acquired remake rights to “Starbuck” in April, tapping Ken Scott to write and direct, with Andre Rouleau producing (Variety, April 23).

As previously reported (Variety, Oct. 28), the Gallic makeover stars French comedian Jose Garcia as a man who, when his girlfriend becomes pregnant, learns that his donations to a sperm bank 20 years earlier have spawned 533 children, 142 of whom want to meet their progenitor.

The Gallic re-do is set up at rights holder Made in PM, which produces with Studiocanal and French broadcaster TF1.

It goes into production March 4 for release via Studiocanal Oct. 30. TF1 has French free-to-air rights. Canal Plus has pay TV rights.
