Steven Gaydos upped at Variett

Exec named VP and executive editor

Variety has promoted Steven Gaydos to VP and executive editor, giving him expanded duties overseeing all editorial for features, events, creative partnerships, custom publishing and other special projects.

As Variety transitions from a daily print publication to an enhanced weekly format, parent company Penske Media Corporation is significantly increasing the number of special features and issues — more than 100 per year — to be overseen by Gaydos.

“We are excited to expand Steve’s role at Variety and feel it falls in line perfectly with the increased emphasis we are placing on features and events,” said Michelle Sobrino, publisher of Variety.

During his long tenure at Variety, Gaydos has been responsible for nearly 200 reports and related events each year, directing the multi-platform production of territorial surveys, film, TV, digital and music reports, as well as business-oriented personality and corporate profiles. In addition, he created and directed the “10 to Watch” program and oversees various Variety initiatives such as the brand’s Impact Lists, Hollywood’s New Leaders, Dealmakers and the Billion Dollar series.

“Variety’s core strengths — credibility, access, influence — are already being revitalized by Jay Penske’s team in virtually every area from brilliant design to exciting digital platforms,” said Gaydos. “Our already first-rate editorial team is getting upgraded and under Penske and our new publisher Michelle Sobrino, we now have the opportunity to excel, compete and flourish.”

Gaydos is a member of the Writers Guild of America, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and the European Film Academy. He is author of “The Variety Guide to Film Festivals,” (Variety/Putnam) and is also co-editor of “Movie Talk from the Frontlines” (McFarland) and “Cannes: 50 Years of Sun, Sex and Celluloid” (Miramax/Hyperion). He is also regularly featured as an entertainment expert for domestic and international broadcasters and press.

Gaydos’ promotion follows Variety’s Feb. 26 announcement of three new editors-in-chief: Claudia Eller, Cynthia Littleton and Andrew Wallenstein, who will oversee film, television and digital/new media respectively. On March 1, Variety.com unveiled its redesigned, paywall-free site. The new format of Variety’s weekly print edition debuts March 26.
