‘Spinning Plates’ wins Santa Barbara audience prize

'More Than Honey' takes best doc, 'Coming of Age' top international pic

Culinary-themed docu “Spinning Plates,” directed by Joseph Levy, won the Audience Choice award at the 28th Santa Barbara Film Festival.

The fest’s documentary film prize went to “More Than Honey,” directed by Markus Imhoof, about the global plight of endangered honeybees.

Panavision’s Spirit Award for Independent Cinema, for a film made outside mainstream Hollywood, was awarded to “Babygirl,” directed by Macdara Vallely, while the international film nod went to “Coming of Age,” directed by Gerhard Ertl and Sabine Hiebler.

The Nueva Vision Award for the best Spanish/Latin American film was awarded to “7 Boxes,” directed by Juan Carlos Maneglia and Tana Schembori.

Shorts prizes went to “Barriers,” directed by Israel’s Golan Rise, for live-action short under 30 minutes, and to “Sleight of Hand,” directed by Michael Cusack, for animated short.

The Fund for Santa Barbara Social Justice Award, for a docu that addresses social justice issues, went to “Revolution,” directed by Rob Stewart and exec produced by Gus Van Sant.

The 11-day event wrapped Sunday with the U.S. premiere of Rowan Athlale’s “Wasteland.”
