A Prophet Remake: Sony Options French

Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe set to produce the English-language remake

Sony has bought English-language remake rights for Jacques Audiard’s 2010 Oscar-nominated French hit, “A Prophet,” with Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe producing.

“This is an epic crime saga with compelling characters and original storytelling,” said Moritz, who will produce via his Original Film banner. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to make an English language version of the film and I am grateful to have the trust of Jacques Audiard and his producers.”

Columbia Pictures prexy Doug Belgrad made the announcement, along with the studio’s president of production Hannah Minghella.

“We think ‘A Prophet will translate perfectly for English-speaking audiences,” Minghella said.

“A Prophet” tells the story of a imprisoned young man’s rise after being mentored by an powerful crime boss. The film premiered in 2009 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won raves along with the fest’s Grand Jury Prize.

The film, which Sony Pictures Classics distributed Stateside, made $2 million domestically and grossed nearly $16 million overseas (of which France alone contributed $10 million).
