Shawn Ryan and David Wiener to pen adaptation

Warner Bros. is ramping up development of “Sleeper,” a long-in-development DC Entertainment property that’s set up with producers Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Jennifer Todd.

The studio has brought on the writing team of  Shawn Ryan and David Wiener to pen the adaptation of “Sleeper,” based on the series from DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint, written by Ed Brubaker with art by Sean Phillips. The series began publication in 2003.

“Sleeper” — set in noir universe where a few people are spontaneously developing superpowers — follows Holden Carver, a man who can absorb pain and pass it on to others, as he infiltrates a criminal organization on behalf of a law enforcement agency. His allegiances come into question, especially when he falls for the alluring killer, Miss Misery.

Affleck and Damon have a first-look deal at Warner Bros. through their Pearl Street banner. No director or actors have been attached to “Sleeper.” Lynn Harris is supervising for the studio.

The project dates back to 2008 when Warner Bros. set up “Sleeper” with Sam Raimi and Josh Donen producing through their Stars Road banner. Tom Cruise was once reported to be attached as well.

Ryan is best known as the creator and showrunner of “The Shield.” Wiener worked with Ryan on ABC’s “Last Resort,” which Ryan co-created.

Wiener worked on season two of “The Killing” and most recently as a supervising producer on Moira Walley-Beckett’s Starz series “Flesh and Bone.” He also wrote “Extraordinary Chambers,” directed by Pam MacKinnon in 2011 at the Geffen Playhouse, where it received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for Best Play.

Ryan is repped by WME. Wiener is repped by UTA and Schreck Rose & Dapello.

Brubaker’s name is the kiss of death. Pathetic opportunist who was only in comics trying to break into movies. Pray they’re just taking the name and tossing the rest. DC Entertainment needs to flush the stink of the comics if they expect to make these properties work for a main stream non-fanboy audience.

Looks like matt damon will join DC cinematic universe. I hope he gonna be the flash for justice league movie

    • Rennan Gomes says:

No, man. Flash can be the same Grant Gustin, in addition, Damon to have more size Aquaman.

      • alex james says:

grant gustin is never has experience act on the big screen especially on big blockbuster movie. he just an tv show actor. while matt damon is world class and well known actor. he was nominated on oscars among another great actors. besides, if matt damon be the flash, he will attract a lot of audience to see the flash movie. the flash is a big character and the big 5 of dc besides superman, batman, wonder woman and green lantern. so having an inexperience actor such as grant gustin might not help to increase the flash popularity. DC need someone who are well known actor that can carry a big franchise such as the flash
